About
Piclo is on a mission to make our energy system smart, flexible and more sustainable.
The energy industry has entered a new era. Supply and demand are decentralising fast; energy companies are starting to embrace renewables and looking for new ways to reduce costs, increase efficiency and build a smarter grid. That’s where Piclo comes in.
Our flagship product, Piclo Flex, is an industry first - it’s the leading online marketplace for flexible energy trading in the UK, and frontrunner in a sector that’s poised to transform smart energy technology.
We’re hiring a UX Designer to work on both existing and new projects that are transforming the energy industry. You’ll be joining our friendly team at an exciting time - since Piclo Flex launched in 2018 it’s supported over 250 competitions for flexibility services and we’re busy preparing for more throughout the year.
We're a small team but we have a really critical role in the energy industry, which means the work you'll be doing is a critical piece for the energy industry transitioning into a low carbon future.
Our mission as a business is about having the world powered by renewable energy, so this person would be taking part in a really important product (not many companies can say that!)
About you
Our ideal candidate meets many - but not necessarily all - of the below criteria:
-
You have 3 years minimum work experience within a relevant role.
-
You have experience of some if not all standard UX skills: research, user research, user testing, sketching, workshop facilitation, wireframing, prototyping, flow diagrams, ticket scoping, QA testing.
-
You enjoy working closely with the whole production team, including developers and product managers.
-
You can communicate complex ideas effectively both verbally and written (or drawn!).
-
You have an eye for detail and are confident working with multiple data types (both number and text based) with some skills in Excel (or other spreadsheet software packages).
-
You can translate user feedback and user actions into effective design inputs.
-
You enjoy working with the whole team to collectively design a solution, you’re often visualising ideas that other people have had.
-
You are fluent in verbal and written English, even if it’s not your first language.
Also desirable:
-
You are motivated by Piclo’s mission to make our energy system smart, flexible and clean and are excited to join a growing team.
-
Some experience in small startup environments.
-
You have strong user empathy but also consider UI when designing new flows or products.
-
An understanding of the energy industry, from the perspective of suppliers, regulator or the networks.
About the role
In a typical week, you’ll be researching new areas of the electricity industry, this is often focused on how the networks function currently, and looking at how improvements can be introduced to optimise processes. This will likely include interview sessions with users in the industry and testing prototypes you’ve made with them. Your ideas will be quickly brought to life in our agile production processes, so you won’t ever spend too long on a particular feature or design. You’ll lead design sessions with the production team, always at the earliest opportunity, and also be involved when it’s time to scope the work into sprint sized tickets.
-
This is a full-time role, and we imagine you’ll work (mainly) office hours.
-
Start date ASAP
Piclo perks
-
Our London office is in Old Street/Shoreditch (EC2A) and has excellent transport links. It’s a calm, friendly environment with casual dress, free fruit/snacks and organic coffee.
-
You’ll have the freedom to split your time between our bright, modern office or work remotely (~2 days per week) once you’re up to speed.
-
We run fortnightly sprint meets for the whole company so everyone is aware and engaged with our progress. We also stop work early every other Friday for Show and Tell, where the production team demo new features over a drink.
-
We have a generous holiday allowance of 33 days, a sound setup for working from home and a flexible 35-hour working week.
Also desirable:
-
Experience in small startup environments.
-
Knowledge and experience of best practices for agile product management. Among other things, you‘re able to support the dev team to manage code reviews, testing and documentation.
-
Understanding of the energy industry, from the perspective of suppliers, the regulator or the networks.
If we like the look of your application, we’ll invite you for an initial chat (30 mins) over video/phone to learn more about you and get you hyped about energy flexibility.
Promising applicants will be asked to complete a design challenge early on in the application process and at a time that is convenient for you (it’ll take around 2 hours).
Lastly, we’ll arrange a second interview at the office to meet members of the team (~2.5 hours)
We welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives but can only accept people who have the right to live and work in the UK. We are an equal opportunity employer and a pleasant and supportive place to work.
How to apply...
Full managed
We take care of the entire process for you so we can manage and remove poor experiences like ghosting, no feedback, no updates and so on 🙌
All you have to do is let your Relationship Manager know you’re interested, ask them any questions you have and they will take care of the rest.
Straight to the front
From there, what’s next is super simple 😇
If you like the initial sound of the company/ role. We then act as your “in” with them and set up an initial phone chat with you and the Hiring Manager there.
The chat will be pretty informal and should only last 10-15 minutes - It's a fact find for both of you.
More than prepared
Before the call we will send you EVERYTHING you'll need to know about the company / who they are looking for / format of the call and so on.
You will be fully prepared and know what to expect at every stage 😀
